Chapter 25 - Double date

Translation: Thrax

The four of us were walking back to the cafe terrace where Serea, Miss Bell, and Miss Silvia were waiting.

“There is no way that I’d lose to someone like you if this were a sword fight!”

You’re such a sore loser. Though, I did just start learning the sword about a year ago, so it might have been a close match.

“You do know that if you were to start swinging a sword in the middle of town, the guards would immediately arrest you, right?”

“The only reason you can spout out like that is because you have no idea who I am.”[TN-1]

“Hmm, I wonder who you might be.”

“You wonder!?... Can’t you see just by looking at me!?”

“Nah, nothing is coming to mind.”

If I remember correctly, he is the son of Viscount Wiles. Their territory is the fourth one to the north. I have met Viscount George Wiles a few times, but I am not sure which of his sons he is. Nor have I met him at any parties. I guess, since he is attending the vassal conference in the palace, he brought his son along to the capital.

“I’m the firstborn son of Viscount Wiles! The difference in social standing between me and a commoner brat, like you, is huge!”

“I have no idea what rural territory you are from, but this is the capital. There are sons and daughters of Viscounts and Counts all over the place. It’s not really that rare. Also, how can the noble son of an aristocrat so proudly introduce himself after being beaten to a pulp by a commoner brat? If I was a noble, and lost like that, I absolutely wouldn’t want to introduce myself out of shame.”

“Ugh.”

“Nobles are supposed to fight to protect commoners in times of need, right? That’s why they are so haughty. And yet, you are weaker than a commoner. Are you really a noble? Even if you say you are, I really don’t buy it. So, try introducing yourself again. What’s your real name?” [TN-2] [EN-1]

“You son of a…..”

He looks livid.

“You, what’s your name?”

“Shin”

“Shin what? … Shindler? Shinklift?”

Actually, only very high ranking nobles and royals are allowed to have such short first names like ‘Shin’. The lower the rank of nobility the longer the name gets.

“What a pain. I don’t know how you nobles do things, but, for us commoners, having short and easy to understand names is normal.”

“I’m Jack.”

Aah, he’s Jackshreet Wiles! [TN-3]

Serea mentioned his name while talking about the game.

He’s one of the capture targets!

When we got back to the table where Serea, Miss Bell and Miss Silvia were at, he just plopped down on a chair.

Where are your manners, Jack?

“Jack-sama…”

“Hmph!”

Isn’t Miss Silvia your fiancé? I wonder if they are at odds……

“Jack-sama, these two are Miss Bell and Miss Serea. They have been keeping me company.”

“I’m Bell, pleased to meet you.”

“Hello, I’m Bell’s little sister, Serea.”

“And who is this scary looking guy?”

He points to Shreegan, who is ignoring him.

“He’s my brother, Shreegan.”

“I’m Shreegan. Sorry for the trouble my little brother caused.”

“You look nothing like each other!”

Jack looks at us, surprised.

“No matter how you look at us, were brothers. See? We are identical.” [EN-2]

Don’t grab me by the shoulder like that, Shreegan! Your face is too close!

“Don’t mention our faces, though. That’s none of your business.”

“Who in the world are you……”

“I’m an imperial guardsman, and Miss Bell is a maid.”

Shreegan says he’ll answer any question.

“The younger brother of an imperial guardsman. Now it makes sense as to why he’s so strong……” [TN-4]

Jack seems assured. I don’t think that being the younger brother of a guard makes you strong by default, but if that is enough for him, it’s fine by me.

“Shin-sama… what does he mean by strong?”

Serea looks worried.

“Nothing much. It was just an exchange between two guys.”

“Shin-sama, a button came off your coat.”

“What does she mean by ‘sama’? Aren’t you being arrogant? Are you forcing your girlfriend to call you that?”

I don’t want to hear the word arrogant from you.

“What does it matter? Miss Silvia calls you ‘Jack-sama’ too.”

“Shut up. That’s cus I’m a noble.

He looks like a kid when he gets angry. Well… he is a kid.

Alright. What are we going to do now?”

Shreegan asks.

“Since we've become friends, why don't we all go around together?”

Serea looked a bit happy. I wonder if they started getting along.

“…Jack-sama, I would like to do that as well. This must be some kind of fate.”

“I don’t remember becoming friends with anyone. Don’t you try commanding me.”

This guy pisses me off.

“Forget it. Lets just leave this guy and go to the concert without him. What do you think, Miss Silvia? This guy has Schwartz with him, and we will walk you all the way back to your house.”

“H-hey!”

“Then, tell us where you’d want to go.”

“Uhm, well since I’ve finally come to the capital I’ve wanted to take a look at the weapon shops.”

“…Is that really a place where you should go while going around with a girl?” [EN-3]

“Is it really a no go?”

“Of course you can’t.”

“Yeah, no way.”

“It’s an awful idea.”

“I don’t think it’s the best idea.”

When I criticised him, Miss Bell, Serea, Shreegan, and even Schwartz (who had started fading into the background) all nodded along with me.

“If Jack-sama wants to go see them, I would be fine with that.

When Silvia said that, Jack joyfully said ‘Great! It's decided then!’.

“It’s not decided! The way you are, would you ever be able to properly escort a girl? The point of a date is to let

her

have fun.” [EN-4]

“We aren’t on a date!”

This guy is such a pain in the ass.

“Settle down now. Everyone is prickly because they haven’t eaten anything. For starters, have some of these.”

Miss Bell brought us a lot of sandwiches she got from the café. Serea casually poison tests the food, and then feeds it to me. Jack was shocked when he saw that.[TN-5]

“…You two are really close.”

“And the two of you don’t seem close at all. Aren’t you supposed to be engaged?”

“Our parents decided that on their own. They don’t care if we get along or not.” [EN-5]

“You know, if you can’t even get along with your own fiancé, you will be unpopular for the rest of your life.”

“That’s right.”

“For sure.”

“He’ll probably be unpopular.”

“No way he’d be popular.”

And criticism flooded from Miss Bell, Shreegan, Serea, and Schwartz.

Suddenly, Miss Silvia bursts into tears.

“He-hey……”

Unsurprisingly, Jack is flustered.

“Jack-sama doesn’t need to be popular!”

You are going through quite a bit of hardship, Miss Silvia. Honestly, my chest hurts a little.

When I looked at Serea’s face, I could see her slowly sending a tiny nod (that only I’d understand the meaning of) my way.

Even after everything, this guy was persistent. So, we decided on going to the weapons shop first. After that, he reluctantly agreed to tag along with us to the concert we were supposed to go see today. [TN-6]

As we were going through town, Serea and I had a secret discussion.

“(Serea, that guy is Jackshreet Wiles!)”[TN-7]

“(Yes, I figured that out while I was talking with Miss Silvia as well.)”

“(What should we do? From our perspective, it would be best if those two started getting along with each other.)”

“(That’s right! … I feel bad for Miss Silvia.)”

According to Serea's memory, Jack is a narcissist and a domineering sadist.

He is unable to accept that his parents have chosen a fiancé for him without care for his own will. The fact that he has a fiancée, and his rough behaviour, creates a distance between him and the other girls at the academy.

During all of that, the heroine approaches him openly, and he opens up his heart to her and falls in love with her. Since Miss Silvia isn’t a villainess in the story, she doesn’t appear much in the game. There is also a scene where the heroine secretly watches as Jack breaks up with Silvia, and Silvia easily accepts it. After that, their relationship naturally dissolves, and Sylvia's story does not appear in the game anymore. Even her whereabouts after the ending are a mystery. This game has such a messy plotline. [EN-6]

Now that I’ve met him in real life I really have to wonder. Are there really girls out there that fall for this type of guy? I probably don’t get it because I’m still a kid.

He might be able to, after some difficulty, grow up into a competent young man who knows how to conduct himself properly. But before that happens, Miss Silvia would probably get completely fed up with his actions.

Going to the weapons shop really makes you happy, huh Jack.

I’ve handled so many weapons that the country's elite troops use to the point where I’m sick of them. So, these dull, cheap looking swords and spears sold in the shop are something I’d never even consider using.

See, even Shreegan and Schwartz don’t seem interested at all.

Silvia looks even less interested. Or rather, if anything, she looks frightened of the things.

Serea is curiously checking out everything, though.[TN-8]

“What do you think of this one?!”

Jack’s eyes sparkled at a cool short sword that even a child could wield.

“You wouldn’t be able to protect yourself with a sword like that. That one only looks cool……”

“Really? The polished blade looks amazing, right? Don’t you think it’s cool?”

“A sword is a tool that you entrust your life to. Coolness doesn’t really matter.”

“…That really is a commoners way of thinking.”

“In the first place, a cheap sword like that, with the blade all singed, looks like it would break at the first sign of use.”

“What’s with you? Which one would you choose, then?”

I look around, but none of them look impressive.

“(If I were you, I wouldn’t buy anything from this store.)”

He gets startled when I whisper to him.

“(Seriously, though, what’s with you?)

In the end, he ended up buying a cool looking shiny short sword.

Since he can't go carrying it all around town, I told him to just have Schwartz come and pick it up later. I left my contact information at the store, just in case, though.

[TN-1] Arghhhh the irony is so strong with this one

[TN-2] Shin is verbally going for the throat, didn’t know he was that savage

[TN-3] The name here is “Jakkushuriito” If anyone has any better idea on how to write it out in English better, I’m all ears.

[TN-4] The cope is so strong with this one

[TN-5] I still don’t get how his fiancé can do the poison testing, she is also one of the most important nobles in the kingdom. Or, alternatively, it could just be them basically playing around since they are kids, and the adults have already done all of the real testing.

[TN-6] As long as it’s not Shakespeare at this point

[TN-7] Author uses the brackets to emphasise that they are whispering

[TN-8] Serea can have fun anywhere basically, as long as there is no Shakespeare involved.

[EN-1] Oh sah-NAP!

[EN-2] I really like how insistent Shreegan keeps being on this point. Especially from the artwork with his pointed teeth and everything, lol.

[EN-3] Ugh. I haaate these types of phrases.

[EN-4] A date is supposed to have BOTH people involved have fun, though you can take turns if your interests are that different from each other.

[EN-5] So you take it out on the only other person who didn’t have a choice in the matter. Genius! At being a pig…

[EN-6] If this didn’t give a glimpse into the heroine’s actual attitude, I don’t know what will.
